Videotron’s New X8 PVR Impressive

I have been using Videotron’s new Multi-Room HD PVR X8 for about a week now and you can colour me impressed. This new device built by Cisco is a very powerful addition to my home TV system.

This new X8 PVR is a lot smaller and lighter than my current model and it runs quieter and a lot cooler too. I was impatient to try it out, so I just put it on top of my old unit connected the Videotron coax cable, the HDMI cable to my home entertainment system and powered it up. In 20 minutes it was ready to go.

First step was to browse around the interface and set up such things as start-up channel, video output to 1080i and hide widgets. The video quality seemed slightly better than from my old unit but noticeable is how smooth interface is due to the faster processor. Channel changes are instant and scrolling through the TV guide is much smoother the my old unit. One pleasant surprise was the IR codes are the same as my old unit so I didn’t have to make any changes to My Logitech Harmony Ultimate Universal Remote.

Now to test the marquis feature of the X8, the ability to record 8 simultaneous programs…that’s enough to satisfy everyone in the house. There is plenty of capacity too..the 2 TB drive will hold 234 hours of HD content or 1196 hours of SD content. I set it up to record 8 different channels all in 1080i HD.

Now with that many streams recording I was worried it might impact on my internet service which is on the same pipe. Well, I was impressed to see no reduction in my internet bandwidth. Even with 8 TV programs coming in..acttually 10 because I had the other two TVs tuned to different channels…I still had the full 60Mbps download and 10Mbps up.

I love the new  Videotron Multi_Room HD PVR X8. It is an impressive piece of equipment that allows me to record up to 8 simultaneous programs, I can watch these recorded programs on any one of the 3 TVs in the house. Or, I can start watching TV in the family room pause it and continue watching in the bedroom. From every location the operation is as smooth as silk and selections happen instantly.

Currently the X8 is only available for sale at $399 directly from Videotron. Installation is simply a matter of connecting a couple of wires if you already have Multi-Room feature installed. If you don’t have Multi-Room feature activated, you will need a $59.95 service call to set it up.
